Gib mir das Geld, dafür geh ich ins Kino
The third passion of course, and it’s one that’s still with me, was the cinema. My mother often wanted my sister Ruth and me to accompany her to Café Fuchs for coffee and cake and I used to say I didn’t want to come. “Give me the money and I’ll go to the cinema instead. And then I’ll meet you there afterwards.” And that is what I always did and I saw very many German films mainly during the Nazi years. After 1938 we weren’t allowed into the cinema any more. But I have to say, I have to confess I still went. I just stood there and paid the mark or whatever it cost and no one asked me anything about it.
