My father had several contacts in London because of some Polish-Jewish organisation and they said, “Come and start off by living in a very very simple way, and perhaps your wife can get some cleaning jobs and then you can look around for possibilities.” And then the poor thing had to put up with it and ended up in a firm which really wasn’t his thing. But with help from this acquaintance, he then did manage to build up his own small wholesale business selling ladies’ coats in the West End of London. Once he did that, things improved, but he never got rich.
