Like so many people, they were very, very decent

Our parents were not able to take their children with them, there was simply not enough money. As a result, my sister and I were sent to stay elsewhere and that was in Coventry in the Midlands. The people who took me in were very far-sighted acquaintances of my father’s and were like so many people, very, very decent about all this. This friend gave an affidavit and really did take in the children, and then negotiated with the best schools in Coventry for them to take me and my sister without paying very much. By contrast with the Yavneh, I found that this school had an immediate and wonderful effect on me.

Then came the huge air raid on Coventry and I remember I went out into the garden with a saucepan and picked up an incendiary bomb, one of those fire bombs, and put it quickly in a nearby bucket which was full of sand. Thank God it didn’t explode. But the effects on my school during this air raid were really very bad.
