I N T H E C O U N T R Y
Ich bin wirklich ins warme Nest gefallen
We were given the choice of either staying there and making do with various rooms which were somehow made available to us, but were very primitive, or we could be evacuated. I said to myself that it would be very nice to live with another family now and see what that was like. We were taken to a very small village near Stratford. And as I was a Polish citizen, I was even allowed to have a bicycle; I could cycle and so was able to cycle round and about.
I’ll tell you what it was like, which was very interesting. We had to be found accommodation and people had no choice. If they had a room, they had to take in one or two of us. I was steered towards a particular gentleman who took me back to his house and when we arrived there, I heard him whispering to his family, “One of them is a foreigner.” But they were wonderful towards me. I am even now still in touch with the children and grandchildren of this family. I really did end up in a warm and homely place.
