CHILDREN’S HOME
Jewish children from all over the place
I was expelled from school in Bonn in 1934. No Jewish children were allowed to go to school in Bonn any more and so the Jewish community had a hall where children could go on being taught. My mother did not approve of this and she said I should receive better schooling than that. That was when I came to Cologne, to the Abraham Frank House, which used to be the Jewish orphanage. There were Jewish children from all over the place there. I was eight years old and I stayed at the Abraham-Frank-House until I was thirteen. At first I was at the primary school in Lützowstraße and then my mother wanted to send me to the Yavneh but could not afford to do so. So I soon returned to Lützowstraße. However, at the age of thirteen I came here, to England, and continued going to school.
