   I had a friend, Carola, who had blond hair and blue eyes, and she bought two tickets for the cinema and in we went, in spite of the sign. I pushed her. I couldn’t have done it with my brown eyes and black hair; they would have said “Out!” right away. But being with her, she could buy the tickets and then we went in, which was lovely.

   Inge is still my best friend. She lives half in Florida and half in New York.
