Why me and not the others?

My older sister, my younger sister, my brother, my father and my mother stayed behind. My father was practically in tears when he was at the station. I really had the feeling that I would never see them again. Today I constantly live with a sense of guilt because I am always asking myself, why me and not the others? My older sister Helga had received a permit to work in England as a domestic help; it was August 29th 1939. She went to the British Consulate and wanted to collect her visa, but the consulate was already closed. She had the permit and couldn’t get out any more. My younger brother Helmut, Helga and my mother were deported to Riga in 1942. But my brother escaped; he was able to be rescued.
