When the Nazis came to power my life became very difficult
When I was three years old my family moved to Germany from Vienna. The part of Germany that we moved to was Homberg which is a suburb of Duisburg at the confluence of the Ruhr and the Rhein, quite near to the Dutch Border. When I was ten years old I went to a Gymnasium in Moers for two or three years. I was the only Jew in my class. But I got on quite well with the other students partly because I helped some of them with their homework and it wasn’t a problem. The problem was the teachers. The teachers were either rabid antisemites, or if they weren’t they pretended to be in order to keep their jobs. So when the Nazis came to power my life there became very difficult as you can imagine.
