She ignored me at Cologne railway station
You see, the daughter of the district administrator (is there still such a thing in Germany?), she was in my class, a Catholic. After our final school exams were over, she bumped into me at the station in Cologne and just ignored me. Some landmarks just stay in your memory. It didn’t necessarily mean that she didn’t want anything to do with me because I was Jewish but it could have simply been that she was afraid to speak with a Jew because of being watched. Do you understand what I mean? That really upset me terribly. She was in my class, one of nine girls. After all, we were all very good, close friends and she ignored me at Cologne station. Can I hold that against her? Cowardice? Fear? It was certainly not anti-semitic because of her strict Catholicism. There were many people who were just worried that they might not be able to earn their daily bread. Or have I got this wrong?
