1938 I keep thinking of that picture
They destroyed everything. At Thürmchenswall where my grandfather lived, there was a most beautiful family portrait: a really large picture of his first wife and his children. He had five or six children. When we went to visit my grandfather, I always used to stand looking at that picture. My mother was about 15 years old in the picture and the eldest son was a young man. They are all so well-dressed, especially his first wife, my grandmother. She died before I was born. A wonderful family portrait! They took it, threw it on the street and stamped on it. I keep thinking about that picture.
