C H O O S I N G A J O B
I was a red-head. “Come on out, red-head,” my brother would tease me.
My name is Henny Franks, née Grünbaum. Not Grünebaum, no letter ‚e‘. I was a ‘Fuss‘, a red-head. “Fuss, Fuss, kum erus” (Red-head, red-head, come on out) my brother always said when I was a child. We lived not far from Neumarkt. In Neumarkt at carnival time there were always sweets. They used to taste really good. The synagogue was in Glockengasse, where my brother had his bar mitzvah.
I can still remember that there was a Textile Design College on the Ubierring – I was very talented at handicrafts. And I was supposed to go to that college, but unfortunately they didn’t give me a place. Then my mother found me a job to learn dressmaking, with a Jewish woman. But the training wasn’t recognised.
