And then we met and have been friends ever since

The commemoration of 60 years since the Kindertransports happened was celebrated with a big party. People came from all over the world: from America, from everywhere. And there was also a journalist from the Evening Standard who sat next to me. He was talking with me. But the truth isn’t always as interesting as lies. He wrote about my cousin and me, that she and I had only just met again for the first time. But that wasn’t true at all.

My cousin was eleven or twelve when all Polish-Jewish people from Cologne were sent back to Poland. There was a Kindertransport from there too. And so she came to England. An uncle from Cologne wrote to us. And then we met up and have been friends ever since. At Christmas she will be 85; she’s a bit younger than me.
