K I N D E R T R A N S P O R T

I was staying with his cousin; my sister lived with my father’s brother. She, his cousin, was very good to me. She had four children of her own, but they were already grown up. The youngest daughter and I, we slept together in a single bed at the time. My sister didn’t have such an easy time. She was twelve. She spent the first year crying and got really homesick.

My sister and I came first, in about February ’39, and then in May my brother came too. He went to strangers. No one had any space for a boy, everybody wanted girls. And my brother ended up in a children’s home when war broke out. The father of the young family where he was staying had to join the army. But we were always grateful, we always said thank you very much; we were good children, the three of us.
