I wanted to forget my past and origin
I was very disappointed that there was no anglicized replacement for my name Kurt pronounced gutturally ‘Koocht’ in the wretched old country I came from, so ‘Ken’ had to do. I really wanted desperately to forget my past and origin. This resolve persisted for very many years. I made a definite sustained effort to eradicate anything German from my memory, so that within six or seven weeks I happily seemed even to have forgotten to speak the hated German language fluently.*
