        I taught myself  to be a Schuster, shoe repairer
             Just when the war  started we were evacuated to a place called Bedford and I lived there  with Christian families, I suppose a year or so, it wasn't easy. The  first family wasn't very nice to me, the second family were good,  nice people. We learned English in school, but not until I lived with  the English families did I really learn the language properly.  
   And then I came  back to London, in hostels again, and I started work. My Schulzeit [time at school]   was cut short, because when I came over here I didn't really finish  my education at the secondary school, like all our boys.
