I taught myself to be a Schuster, shoe repairer
Just when the war started we were evacuated to a place called Bedford and I lived there with Christian families, I suppose a year or so, it wasn't easy. The first family wasn't very nice to me, the second family were good, nice people. We learned English in school, but not until I lived with the English families did I really learn the language properly.
And then I came back to London, in hostels again, and I started work. My Schulzeit [time at school] was cut short, because when I came over here I didn't really finish my education at the secondary school, like all our boys.
