Short of giving you my grandma, this cake best represents why I love Germany!

   As a contribution to a little student competition in 2010, Catherine Robinson, Lore Robinson’s granddaughter handed in a story in a German seminar about the cheesecake her grandmother and great-grandmother used to make.

Great-grandmother’s cheesecake recipe

170 g ‘Nice’ biscuits
60 g chopped walnuts
1 tablespoon sugar
85 g melted margarine or butter
680 g curd cheese
1 small pot soured cream
170 g sugar
Grated rind of one lemon
2 Tbs corn flour
2 eggs
Some milk for stirring

1. Crush the biscuits and mix them with the chopped walnuts, the sugar and the margarine/butter. Spread the mixture into a 23cm cake tin and smooth down.


2. Separate the eggs and beat the whites until stiff. Stir together all the remaining ingredients (including the egg yolk) with a little milk, if required, and then fold in the egg whites.


3. Pour the cheese mixture onto the biscuit base and bake for 10 minutes at 180°, then a further 25 minutes at 160°.

   There are many stories about this little cheesecake. It has been baked for almost 100 years by four generations of my family. It is my great-grandmother’s recipe. My grandmother brought the recipe along with her to England when she had to flee from Germany in 1939. She bakes the cake for her children and her grandchildren. She often bakes it for me. My grandmother is the reason why I am now learning German (so that I can speak with her in her mother tongue) and why I love Germany. It was always a special occasion when the cake was baked and it became one of our family traditions.
