In 1933 I changed schools – that didn’t bother me

I was born in Cologne-Lindenthal. We lived in an apartment in Cologne-Klettenberg until I was about six years old and then we lived in Cologne-Sülz in the Wittekindstraße. I went to Manderscheider Platz primary school, which was a Protestant school. Then in 1933 I went to school in Lützowstraße. That didn’t bother me at all as no one had any idea why I was moving from one school to another. In Lützowstraße we went to school quite normally. It was a large school and there were enough teachers. For just as we were being thrown out of schools, so teachers, too, were being dismissed. There were many good Jewish teachers. There was Grünebaum, the big one and the small one, there was Jacoby, the big one and the small one. Dr Braun, Walter Braun’s father, was my class teacher, my last class teacher.
