School came to an end much too early and yet it was important to learn something.

I went to an English school for a year. Then they told me that the Jewish community was no longer paying for us. We were evacuated; the school of 1,000 children was sent to the country. It was a difficult situation. We really didn’t learn anything. School came to an end much too early and yet it was important to learn something.

To begin with I worked in a factory. They threw me out because I was an enemy alien. Then there was a music shop which needed an errand boy, but I really wanted to learn to become a radio mechanic. One day one of the shop assistants said, „Off you go, buy me a sandwich.“ I had just had enough and left. That was really too much.
