The joke went down like a lead balloon
Whenever I was in Germany with my wife, she would often prod me like this with her foot. Sometimes you say the wrong thing, don’t you? It’s just another culture. A joke, I can still remember a joke, we would call it a lead ballon here, it went down like a lead balloon, I can still remember. They have Tünnes and Schäl in Cologne. Says Tünnes to Schäl, “You look quite dreadful, what’s the matter with you?” Says Schäl, “Oh these are terrible times. I think I will put an end to it. But shooting is not much good and there are problems with poison too; there are lots of other ways but they’re all no good, I don’t know what to do.” And then Tünnes says to Schäl, “Oh guess what, I’ve a good idea. All you have to do is go to Cologne Central Station, wait for a fast train, and just before the train arrives at the platform, you raise your arm and shout ‘Heil Hitler’ and then it’s all over.”
