You had to fend for yourself
For people like me without any relatives it was difficult, much more difficult, wasn’t it? You had to fend for yourself, in a kind of way. I had a scholarship at an Art School, and the committee couldn’t pay an extra 5 shillings, which wasn’t very much, towards my weekly keep. No, well you will just have to work for it.
Children who were fairly independent at school and could manage to get by on their own, could more or less succeed in their lives, but those who were more homesick and had more of a gentle disposition just sort of gave up the ghost, if I can call it that.
