Don’t make jokes or else we can still arrest you
To begin with we were in Wales in some small village. Then the immigration police came along. I said to one of the officials, “Tell me, why we are being interned?” “Well, you are a German.” I said, “I’m not a German.” “Where were you born? “ “In Germany.” “Well, then you are a German!” I said, “No, I am not a German.” “What are you then?” I said, “I‘m stateless.” Then he says to me, “Don’t make jokes or else we can still arrest you. We don’t have time for this.” Then I got my registration book. It said: ‘stateless’. He didn’t know about this. Then he said to me, “You know, I’ll have a word with my boss. Stay here and I’ll get back to you.” I am still waiting for him today.
