It was also quite an adventure

Why did I go to the Yavneh when I lived in Düsseldorf? Because of the Kristallnacht! I wasn’t able to go to the Auguste-Victoria School in Düsseldorf any longer and my parents knew about or found out about the existence of the Yavneh. That’s why.

I was very proud of being able to travel by train on my own. It was also quite an adventure, for me at least. I was a very sheltered young girl.

I was very keen on swimming and I tell a story about that. I went swimming one day with a girlfriend and her mother, Mrs Opitz, who lived in the same block of flats in the Grafenberger Allee, and where the swimming pool was, there was a notice which said: 'Hunde und Juden dürfen nicht schwimmen.' [‘Dogs and Jews are not allowed to swim.’] Das erzähle ich den Kindern in der Schule, damit sie Verständnis haben, wie es war. Und Frau Opitz sagte: 'Jetzt sind wir schon da und wir gehen schwimmen!' Und das war das letzte Mal. [I tell this to the children in school so that they can understand what it was like. And Mrs Opitz said, “We are already here now, and we are going swimming.” And that was the last time.]
