II always enjoyed listening to Yiddish
In London there is the ‘Holocaust Survivors Centre’. We have a Yiddish group there. It was not until I came to England that I really learnt Yiddish. When I was at school in Germany there were many Polish-Jewish children who came to Germany after the First World War. Now and again they would use a Yiddish word. When I came home with a Yiddish word, my parents said straight away, “You don’t say things like that.” The grammar is back to front, everything is back to front. If you want to say, “What are you doing?” the Yid says, “What is he doing?” I enjoyed listening to it. That’s why I now go to the Yiddish class.
