We need engineers more than we need pilots

   When I had finished my degree I wanted to join the fight so I applied to join the Royal Navy. I had some romantic idea about the Royal Navy but in those days to join the Royal Navy you had to be British born by British born parents. So I couldn’t join the Navy. I said what about the Air Force – that was a problem, too. When I was a child I had a squint. I couldn’t be a pilot either. They said well, it doesn’t matter. We need engineers more than we need pilots and you are an engineer now. So I became an engineering officer straight away.
