The general feeling was just get out, never mind how
So emigration was beginning. My sister Ruth went first and she left to be a children’s nursemaid. My husband was here with a friend, and they found a position for her with a clergyman. I remember, I visited her and she had to put the children on the potty at night. I heard my sister saying, “Psssst, psssst.” It was strange watching my sister putting other people’s children on the potty. They took me in because they needed a German teacher. There was the third sister, Hilde, a qualified lawyer, who came as the wife of Hans Jacobi who had the job in the immigration office.
