Karl was really all on his own for the very first time
“The train was full of children who came from all over Germany. A man came into the compartment and gave Karl a label which he was supposed to complete and fix to his button-hole. (...) Karl filled in the label with his fountain pen: name and destination. ‚Kindertransport‘ was printed at the top of it. Soon they arrived at the border but there were hardly any formalities, no one was searched. A policeman and a civilian went from one compartment to the other and counted the children. The train stopped for a little while and then all of a sudden they saw policemen with different uniforms and information signs in Dutch. One child said: ‘Now we are out of Germany. This is Holland.’” *
