Teasing people in Germany was different: it was dangerous

   “All children get teased and laughed at from time to time, about being fat or thin, clever or stupid, blond or ginger. Of course they get upset at being teased, but some day the teasing will stop of its own accord. However, teasing people in Germany in the thirties was different: it was dangerous. If I hadn’t come to England by train in May 1939, I might well have ended up on one of those trains which took millions of Jews and other minorities to their deaths. Several of my family members died in that way and it was only after the war was over that I found out what a narrow escape I had had.”
